Sex and my daughters, my parenting advice.

Today my 8 yr old, Avery, asked me what Katy Perry meant by wanting to see your peacock.  This is a song on Katy Perry's latest CD.  I know it's the 5th song track, so I always skip it in the car, knowing that my mini's will inevitably be singing the catchy lyrics.

Well, first I'll explain that my girls, and their friends, love Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and other pop female artists. I am totally fine with this.

I explained that Katy Perry was calling a man's penis is a peacock, and that Katy is a grown up, so that is OK.  But, I told Avery and Rylie (my 5 yr old) that I'd rather them not sing that song, because it is intended for grown ups and not kids.  Avery said, I thought a peacock was a bird, lol.  So true!

If you are of certain age, do you remember "Afternoon Delight?"  I remember singing that song in the car with my brothers, I loved it and my mom never explained what it meant, nor did I ask.  I didn't find out until well into adult hood what the heck an afternoon delight was, lol.  As well as several other songs, lol.

I have always been careful with my daughters not to make sex a dirty thing.  I am a very sexual person, but keep things at the appropriate age level for my daughters and their friends.  My little girls have no idea that I love burlesque and such.

Of course my adult daughters do know me and what I enjoy.

I think it's important to keep an open mind, and remember that kids will be kids.  They will ask questions, and I think it's best to be totally honest with them, never over react, and never make them feel ashamed for being curious.  As adults I hope that they are never ashamed or afraid of being sensual women, if they so chose so.  What ever makes them comfortable. :)
